Bowland Brewery

Started four years ago, Bowland Brewery makes handcrafted real ales and sells them to around 100 local businesses – look out for Sawley Tempted (named after the Ribble Valley village of Sawley), Bowland Gold, Chipping Steamer, Hen Harrier and Bowland Dragon in local pubs and restaurants.

The brewery’s visitor centre is a beer enthusiast’s heaven, with displays, lots of beer and beer-related items on offer. You can also see the brewers at work through viewing windows into the brew-house. The beers are made using only the finest marris otter malted barley and the fullest flavoured hops. You can buy bottled beers (500ml) from Bashall Barn next door, including Sky Dancer, a pale gold beer, Cromwell Stout and Headless Peg, a dark bitter. There are five-litre mini-casks of different ales on offer, too.

Food for thought…

  • Headless Peg is named after Peg O’Nell, a serving girl at nearby Waddow Hall, who broke her neck fetching water and was said to demand a life every seven years. Traditionally a bird or animal was drowned on Peg’s Night to satisfy her ghost.
  • Brewery tours are available. The Bowland Taster is £3.50 per person for a one-hour tour, with up to two pints each, and the Bowland Soaker, only for the very brave and thirsty, is £7.50 per person and includes up to six pints of ale (minimum 12 people).
