Cheesie Tchaikovsky

Cheesie Tchaikovsky is a small specialist cheese shop and delicatessen, with an unrivalled, evolving and diverse range of UK and continental artisan-made cheese. It is no idle claim that proprietor Jan and manageress Jane are "dedicated to customer service," as this is a truly customer-driven operation. As a result, it is easy to leave the shop with more than intended!

While the range includes great cheese from Rungis Market in Paris and other top continental suppliers, Jan is careful to include the best of local offerings, including Mrs Kirkham's, Sandham's, Parlick Fell, Shorrocks Black Beauty Lancashires and Cringlebrook's goat’s cheese from Garstang. Deli products include Silver and Green, preserves from Breda Murphy and Reedy’s, Cumberland smoked cheese and flours and oats from Little Salkeld in Cumbria, Ribble Valley’s nearest artisan flourmill.

Visit on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and you will find Jan’s handmade bread on the side counter. Made with stoneground organic or biodynamic flour from Little Salkeld and using traditional techniques, and minimal amounts of yeast, the range will usually include spelt breads, four grain and seed, 100 per cent seeded rye and pesto knots.

Food for thought...

  • A free sample is always on the cards – you usually don’t even have to ask before a tasty morsel is thrust into your unresisting hand – and if you have a passion for a particular cheese they will go to extraordinary lengths to get it for you.
  • The flatbread, olive oil ranges, chocolates, pasta, chorizos and olives are excellent, but the cheese and bread really sing out.
  • At lunchtime, hungry students and business people gather at Cheesie for a happy smile, homemade soup and baguettes, and wraps with unusual and delicious fillings.
