D. Byrne and Co

One of the best-known Clitheroe institutions and a magnet for fine wine enthusiasts, who flock here from across the North, D. Byrne & Co is a multi-award winning independent wine merchants run by the founder’s great-grandsons, Andrew, Philip and Tim Byrne. Regularly attracting glowing write-ups in national newspapers, this gem of a wine shop stretches into labyrinthine cellars that run under King Street and has changed little since being built in the Victorian era by founder Denis Byrne.

The wines are from across the world and the Byrne brothers’ expert and regular buying trips and unrivalled relationships with many wineries ensure that some of the best can be found here. Top countries to look out for are wines from Spain, France, Austria and Australia, but few countries are not represented in this amazing collection.

Food for thought...

• While good quality wine is widely available in supermarkets, but Byrne's has kept ahead of the game with its great selection of wine and prices.
• The Byrne brothers have a deep respect for local food and have become extremely good at recommending particular wines to accompany traditional Lancashire dishes.
• If we produced wine in Ribble Valley, Byrne's would stock it for sure. Meanwhile, it offers a range of Bowland beers and Copper Dragon beers from Skipton. There is a great selection of spirits, too, including fabulous malt whiskies, as well as fine sherries and fortified wines.
• Byrne's does sell by mail order, but it is a real shame not to visit a shop as unusual as this - just mind your head when you make your way into the cellars!
