Exchange Coffee

Raise your nose to the air in Clitheroe’s Wellgate and it will not take you long to find this speciality coffee and tea merchants, which stocks over 30 varieties of coffee and more than 50 loose teas. The company was started by local man Mark Smith from his market stall 25 years ago and is a real success story, with shops in Blackburn and Skipton, as well as Clitheroe, and coffee bars in Blackburn and Todmorden, and a thriving wholesale and franchise side.

Exchange Coffee believes the secret to great coffee is freshness, so they source and buy the best "green" coffee from across the world and roast it daily on the premises in small batches. Often customers will be enjoying coffee, either in the coffee shop or to take home, that has been created that morning.

Alongside this core business, the coffee shop’s food includes meat from Harrison and Kerr, fish from Wellgate and jam from a small Cumbrian jam-maker. As well as making cakes on the premises, they buy from Oakroyd Bakery in Ingleton and sell sasparilla from the traditional soft-drinks maker, Mawsons, of Bacup.

Food for thought...

  • Popular coffees to look out for include Brazilian Bruzzi Rainforest Alliance (ethically traded), Columbian and the sought-after Jamaican Blue and Hawaiian Cona.
  • Camomile tea is from the pure camomile flower and heads, and Exchange Coffee's expanding range of herbal and green teas include China Gunpowder and Russian Caravan, a blend of three teas that recreates the tea taken by caravan from India to Russia.
