Hudsons Ices

Butcher Clifford Hudson purchased the Old Toll House in 1913. You can still see the ceiling hooks and the old marble slab he used. In 1938, his wife Sarah and daughter Barbara devised an original recipe for vanilla ice cream that remains a closely guarded secret, despite pleas from some top chefs for it. The main ingredients could not be more local, with milk coming from Thornber’s and eggs from Twiston.

The ice cream is still handmade by current owners Mark and Mandy Paul in the original dairy at the back of the shop and it is so much in demand that they can hardly keep up. The expanding range of flavours includes gooseberry, blackcurrant, damson and cranberry, in season, with much of the fresh fruit coming from Gisburn. No preservatives are used in the making of the ice cream, which has a uniquely fresh flavour.

Food for thought…

  • Among the wonderful traditional village shop memorabilia, look out for the original1940s wafer-maker, which is still in use, and choose from more than 70 different kinds of sweets.
  • When the sun shines, Hudson’s has an outside café.
