From humble beginnings in 2002, Mrs Dowson’s Ice Cream has doubled its output year-on-year. Increasingly concerned to reduce unnecessary additives, Eric and Amanda Dowson source raw milk from their own farm and other Ribble Valley producers. Local wild fruit, such as damson and blackberry, provide seasonal flavours. In 2007, Mrs Dowson’s was only open to the buying public at weekends, but it plans to open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm from 2008. Mrs Dowson's ice creams are also widely available from many farm shops and other outlets in Ribble Valley. Incorporating the "real thing," rather than artificial flavours, Mrs Dowson's includes a number of local products in its ice cream, including cookie crumble from Cottage Cookies in Darwen, iconic Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls from Wigan and other traditional sweets from Stockleys, Mitre Sweets and the producers of Blackpool Rock. Food for thought...
