The Bayley Arms

This historic pub and B&B, close to the famous Jesuit boarding school, Stonyhurst, dates to the 1670s, when the Bayley family owned the college and its estate. A proud local sporting tradition, particularly in rugby, means you can often spot sportsmen past and present rubbing shoulders with locals.

Offering a warm welcome and good value food from a large and varied menu, the Bayley Arms tries to source as much as possible locally and in season, including Bowland lamb and beef, Goosnargh chicken, Mrs Kirkham’s cheese, Brendan Anderton’s sausages and gammon, and black pudding from Andrew Ireland. There are also cask ales from the Bowland Brewery and ice cream and milk from Mrs Dowson’s. Top menu hits include the homemade Bayley steak pudding, with authentic suet pastry, and the chef’s special crème brulee.

Food for thought…

  • The Tolkien Trail around Hurst Green attracts visitors from across the world. Tolkien, creator of the Lords of The Rings trilogy, was a regular visitor to Stonyhurst College, where his son was a priest, and is said to have based his Middle Earth on the area. Visit www.ribblevalley.gov.uk for further details.
  • Children visiting the Bayley Arms are kept occupied with a Lord of the Rings picture to colour in.
  • The pub is a real community hub and home to the local football team, golf and cricket clubs, who meet here regularly.
