The Craven Heifer

Word-of-mouth alone has spread the good news about the great food and service at this family-owned pub at the foot of Jeffrey Hill in the small village of Chaigley. Chef patron Nick Wharf, who has worked at Heathcote’s and Rankin’s, and locals Alison Ashworth and Susie Dinsdale opened for business in March 2005 and have not looked back since.

Nick uses the best local suppliers and organic produce where possible and cooks seasonally influenced specials, too. Anderton’s is the main meat supplier, but they also buy lamb directly from local farmers, while Bowland beer, Exchange Coffee and cheese from Mrs Kirkham’s and Leagram’s are all regulars on the menu. There is a really relaxed atmosphere, with the emphasis on food and service, whether you choose to eat in the bar or restaurant.

Food for thought…

  • You will see a lot of hostelries around this part of the North called the Craven Heifer. In 1807, the Craven heifer was bred on the Duke of Devonshire’s estate. Farmers from far and wide marvelled at her “vast splendour” and she even went on tour in many places between here and London.
  • The pub has just started a monthly cookery class, which is proving very popular with locals and Sunday lunch here is becoming an institution for many families.
