The Inn at Whitewell

In the stewardship of the Bowman family since 1973, the Inn at Whitewell is a beautiful traditional country inn, with an unrivalled Forest of Bowland setting and excellent food. Here you will find quirky family, sporting and hunting memorabilia, comfortable and individually decorated rooms, log fires and a warm welcome.

A sensitive refurbishment and extension a couple of years ago has ensured that even on a packed weekend there is a peaceful spot for a delicious meal. The range of eating areas now includes a new dining room that looks out over the River Hodder and its lovely valley. Spot the fish rising and take in the great view, while enjoying local beer from Bowland, Moorhouses and Copper Dragon.

Most of the food at the inn is sourced locally, including all the beef, lamb and game, such as grouse, pheasant and partridge, as well as homegrown herbs and fruit. Bread is baked on-site and fresh puddings are made every day. Menu favourites from chef Jamie Cadman include Whitewell fisherman’s pie, Cumberland sausage (from the same supplier for 28 years) and game.

Food for thought…

  • Watch out for owner Charles Bowman and his extremely scurrilous stories!
  • The loo walls are crammed with interesting memorabilia – do take a peek.
  • There are no trouser presses at the inn, nor is there a mobile phone signal.
  • An independent wine merchant, Bowland Forest Vintners, is housed at the inn and you can also buy own-brand coffee, marmalade, jams and chutneys to take away. Fishing and other sporting activities can be arranged on request.
