The Millstone Hotel

Chef patron Anson Bolton and his wife, Sarah, took over the Millstone as part of a well-regarded small hotel group in 2002. The building dates to the mid-1700s, when the Edlestone family (village farmers, wheelwrights, blacksmiths and millers) started selling ale to supplement their income. It became a coaching inn and today, retaining much of its charm, is a busy local village pub, with award-winning food.

Anson is a great supporter of Johnson and Swarbrick's famous Goosnargh duck. "I firmly believe that this produce is the best available and I am lucky it is on our doorstep," he said. Other local suppliers include Huntley's of Salmesbury and Penny's of Accrington, while Oliver Kay from Bolton supplies the hotel's fruit and vegetables. One of the most popular menu items is duck spring rolls, with plum sauce and cucumber, and the seasonal menu features a host of local products, including braised Pendle lamb shank, with spring onion champ.

Food for thought…

  • As the nearest pub to the grave of Daniel Thwaites, it is not surprising that this Blackburn ale is a great feature of the menu and is also used in some dishes - try the popular fish in Lancaster Bomber beer batter.
  • Visit the Millstone for a food lovers' weekend featuring not one but two full Lancashire breakfasts, including R. S. Ireland's legendary black pudding and Farnsworth's of Whalley sausages, as well as champagne on arrival and dinner. Close to the M6, it is also a really good meeting place.
